Mary’s Heart
The song “Mary, Did You Know?” never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Each time I hear it, I imagine the flood of emotions that filled Mary’s heart when the angel Gabriel appeared with a message that would change her life—and the world—forever.
Can you picture her in that moment? A young woman, suddenly told she would give birth to the Son of God. Yet instead of fear or hesitation, she responded with courage and faith:
“Behold, the Lord’s bond-servant; may it be done to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38 (NASB)
Mary didn’t whisper a timid yes. She declared it boldly.
Author Debby Thompson, who writes under Living With Eternal Intentionality®, beautifully captures why Mary could accept her divine calling so completely. With her permission, I’m sharing this excerpt from her inspiring post, “Mary Said Yes.” You can read her full reflection at DebbyThompson.com.
Mary said Yes to God—
to His will, His plan, and His call on her life.
Her destiny was sealed in her response.
Mary said Yes because she knew the Word of God.
Because she knew the Word of God, she also knew the Person of God.
And because she knew the Person of God, she was ready to say yes to the opportunity of God.
Mary’s song in Luke 1:46–55 reflects a heart steeped in Scripture. Her words reveal her deep understanding of God’s character—His faithfulness, power, and mercy. She didn’t say yes blindly. She said yes because she knew the One who was asking.
That’s the heart of her story. Knowing God and His Word gave Mary the foundation to respond with pure, unwavering faith.
In this season of reflection and gratitude, may we follow Mary’s example. Let’s seek to know God more deeply through His Word, so that when He calls us into something new—something unexpected—we too can answer with confidence and say,
“Yes, Lord. Let it be done according to Your will.”
